Based on the autobiography by Gila Almagor, Under the Domim Tree is the poignant and very compelling story of a group of orphaned Jewish teens, all survivors of the Holocaust, who come of age and battle very real demons while living in an Israeli youth settlement. On a melancholy note, the film begins slowly and sometimes confusingly as it introduces the children and adults, setting up the story with dispassion. But as the main characters are identified and the heart of the tale unfolds, Under the Domim Tree discovers its voice -- and a haunting one at that. The story is touching without being depressing, and by the sheer courage demonstrated by those who shouldn't have to have their bravery tested, it's also inspirational. (Hebrew with English subtitles)
