Little Man Tate

Foster's impressive directorial debut is a quirky, entertaining comedy/melodrama about a seven-year-old genius who gets caught in a tug-of-war between his working-class mom (Foster) and a determined educator (Dianne Weist).

The story centers around young Fred Tate's lack of social skills (a trait invariably attached to child prodigies), and his leaving his mother to study at an academy for gifted children living under Weist's supervision.

Both Foster and Weist give strong performances and newcomer Adam Hann-Byrd is affecting as Fred. Harry Connick, Jr. has a nice cameo appearance as a college student who befriends the precocious brainiac.

Foxes
Foster stars as one of four girls who share an apartment in the Los Angeles suburbs in this sociological study which poignantly examines the restless lives of today's youths, although it presents more questions than answers.

The Hotel New Hampshire
A felicitous actors' exercise which follows closely the John Irving novel. The serendipitous script examines the exploits of a highly unusual American family, both at home and abroad, and ranges in mood from the almost slapstick to the nearly tragic. While the direction tends to harbor self-indulgence, each actor's portrayal is inventive and endearing.

Silence of the Lambs
A psychopath nicknamed Buffalo Bill is murdering women across the Midwest. Believing it takes one to know one, the FBI sends Agent Clarice Starling (Foster) to interview a demented prisoner who may provide clues to the killer's actions. That prisoner ispsychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins), a brilliant, diabolical cannibal who agrees to help Starling only if she'll feed his morbid curiosity with details of her own complicated life. As their relationship develops, Starling is forced to confront not only her own hidden demons, but also an evilso powerful that she may not have the courageor strengthto stop it!
