Tarantino's audacious, art-house actioner is perhaps the only American film so story-intensive that it deserves the title "the Gone with the Wind of action movies." Travolta and Jackson give exceptional, career performances as a pair of gregarious hit men whose day-to-day activities take them through an interlocking series of darkly comic and horrific scenarios ranging from an accidental drug overdose to a graphic (and unexpected) rape sequence. Tarantino introduces a rogue's gallery of well-drawn characters into a labyrinthine story line, playing with perspective, time and place to create perhaps the most original American film since Citizen Kane. Lengthy without ever being boring, this gritty walk on the wild side features an astounding ensemble.
