REVIEW
This exquisitely photographed film paints a sublime portrait of the harsh life endured in a secluded, 19th-century village high in the mountains of northern Japan. Reacting to their raw existence, the people have adopted several unusual customs, including one which dictates that the elderly, upon reaching the age of 70, are escorted to the top of Narayama Mountain to die in solitude. Director Imamura depicts a cruel and sometimes shocking world to the viewer but one which is based on simple survival.
