REVIEW
Pornography as art, Romance is writer-director Breillat's daring, explicit and often remarkable meditation on the division between sex and love. Marie (Trousselard) is a young woman with a handsome boyfriend Paul (Stevenin) who can not get aroused when she fellates him. While Marie avers that she truly madly deeply loves Paul with all her mind, she insists on having to satisfy her physical needs elsewhere. Embarking on a series of trysts with both Paolo (adult film star Siffredi) and Robert (Berléand), who gets her into bondage, Marie tries to separate the idea of love from the act of love. Breillat is certainly ambitious, and while many viewers may find the film pretentious and even unsuccessful, it does, in fact, pack a wallop. Trousselard gives a full bodied performance trying to show how Marie's affairs intensify and consume her, and she is ably supported by the well-endowed Siffredi and the snakier Berléand.
