REVIEW
An appropriately tongue-in-cheek remake and homage to Herschell Gordon Lewis' sixties gorefest 2000 Maniacs, about a group of teens who find themselves lost in a small southern community on their way to sunny Florida for Spring Break partying. At first everything is peachy, with the overly-eccentric rednecks welcoming the kids with a good ol' fashioned hoedown and other amusements. But soon, as they begin to disappear one by one, it becomes clear that something far more sinister is afoot. Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund stars as the chief baddie Mayor Buckman, and his performance is downright inspired. He transcends the well-known Elm Street character and cements the Mayor as a distinct, yet equally wicked being unto himself. With a good amount of nudity from a myriad of lovely ladies (making out, taking baths, etc.), quirky humor (a redneck sexually pursuing a sheep) as well as some exaggerated and awfully unrealistic bloody effects, 2001 Maniacs is a fitting tribute to the over-the-top fun horror movies of the past. They just don't make stuff like this anymore, and it's a shame. Maniacs disregards anything even remotely resembling good taste. The comedy is offensive and the gore is intentionally cheap and excessive. Some people may be put off by the terrible acting, corny one-liners and intentionally cheesy gore, while lovers of low comedy and horror will thoroughly enjoy the spectacle.
