Domino

The main attraction of Domino should have been its True Crime biographical facet, allegedly telling the partially fact-based tale of Domino Harvey, daughter of movie star Laurence Harvey (The Manchurian Candidate) and model Paulene Stone, who rebelled against her Beverly Hills upbringing by becoming a successful bounty hunter. But instead of telling this fascinating story, producer/director Tony Scott (in post-modern True Romance mode) instead tries to make it into psychedelic journey of psychodrama, irony, pulp fiction and camp humor. Some parts of this are interesting and/or fun, such as the explosive action scene atop the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas, the schemes of mundane underworld figures, and the humiliation of former teen idols, but the disparate elements fail to gel into much beyond a pretentious, overlong, self-conscious mess — a sort of entertaining mess, but a mess nonetheless. There’s so much flashy, meaningless editing that when the leads go on a hallucinatory drug trip, it doesn’t look any different from the rest of the movie. At the center is Keira Knightley as Harvey, apparently instructed to chain smoke and pout instead of connecting with the audience in any way.
