Somewhat overshadowed by Berry's historic win as the first African-American woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress is the fact that she's sensational in this compelling drama, itself a penetrating look at loneliness, racism and loss. Halle plays a working mother whose husband has been executed. Thornton (who should have been in award contention himself but was shutout) is the white guard who oversaw the execution. How these two emotionally distant, fragile souls come together forms the core of an often sexy, always moving story. Though the film is given to possible one-too-many tragedies, it's potent viewing.
