Nichols' landmark comedy made stars of Hoffman and Simon & Garfunkle, and cleared the path for the cinematic concerns of the younger generation. Effortlessly poignant and humorous, the film follows recent grad Benjamin (Hoffman) as he contemplates the future (plastics?) and becomes romantically involved with the sultry Mrs. Robinson (Bancroft in a smashing portrayal) and then her daughter (Ross). A perceptive and double-edged examination of mores and morals in 1960s America.
