Shandling is an alien sent to Earth to impregnate a woman -- any woman -- and return with child to his all-male home world. Enter Bening as an AA member leery of yet another bad relationship and, quicker than you can say “E.T. phone home,” Shandling has forsaken his mission in favor of wooing and wedding her. Shandling’s deadpan arrogance (so hilarious in HBO’s "The Larry Sanders Show") is put to somewhat effective use in this curiously tame comedy that starts out amusing, but loses much steam as the plot becomes bogged down in family values. Another instance in which a promising premise is wasted due to inadequate writing and uninspired direction.
