Depp stars in this atmospheric, but ultimately silly supernatural mystery about an unethical rare book dealer whose assignment to retrieve three copies of an arcane tome brings him into contact with haughty aristocrats, psycho satanists and murder. Polanski’s second foray into the supernatural features the same patient and detailed storytelling as his earlier works (Rosemary’s Baby), but with a far less interesting denouement.
