REVIEW
One might expect this tale of sexual awakening in the sun-drenched hills of Tuscany to be no more than a panderous exercise in lechery on the part of aging director Bertolucci. And to whatever degree this is true (and it is, a little), Stealing Beauty is also a remarkably astute and touching examination of the young woman's innocent, oddly chaste, desire for sexual initiation. The story revolves around a 19-year-old American staying with family friends at their homestead. Clearly out of her element and surrounded by middle-aged adults, she turns to an ailing houseguest (Irons) for solace and comfort. More style than substance, the film is a very satisfying and refreshing look at romance amongst the privileged artist class. Delivering a marvelously natural performance, newcomer Tyler proves herself a worthy lead. Editor's Suggestions
