Writer-director Ruben's entry into the "from hell" genre stars Barrymore as the mysterious, seductive, possibly naughty Ivy, who insinuates herself into the dysfunctional family of an awkward and angry classmate, Sylvie, played convincingly by Gilbert. A familiar battle for identity ensues as the two outcasts venture to see if a slut and an intellectual can maintain a friendship. Ivy soon manipulates her way into Sylvie's wealthy family and sets her sights on seducing dad (Skerritt), whose wife (Ladd) is dying of emphysema. Poison Ivy may be melodramatic, predictable and based on many unfortunate stereotypes, but it sure makes for amusing trash.
