SKINOPSIS
Jennifer Jason Leigh plays the 1920s beat writer well-known for her biting wit. And speaking of "biting" and "beat," when Miss Leigh flashes just the briefest bit of tit, you'll be biting your hand to keep from beating something else. However, as far as "Vicious Circles" go, it's co-star Gwyneth Paltrow's small yet mean little round things that have the more prominent role in the film. As the other woman, the lil' blonde bombshell - armed to the teats with her two (very alert) bombshells aimed skyward - drops a bombshell on poor Mrs. Parker, who walks in to find the topless Paltrow lounging in bed. Ka-Boom!
REVIEW
Leigh gives a tour de force performance as Algonquin wit and writer Dorothy Parker. In this extremely humorous though slightly downbeat examination of a troubled soul, director Rudolph has brilliantly reconstructed 1920s New York -- a time when a select group of Manhattan's literary set convened to sling the next bon mot. In a series of flashbacks, the story follows Parker's rise as an author, her relationships with humorist Robert Benchley (Scott) and playwright Charles MacArthur (Broderick), and the formation of the legendary Algonquin Round Table. Leigh inhabits Parker as if possessed, conveying an eerie worldliness and heartbreaking vulnerability. Though physically miscast, Scott is excellent in capturing Benchley's goofy mannerisms and subtle comedy -- his "Treasurer's Report" is perfection.
