Set in Vietnam in 1929, this adaptation of Marguerite Duras' story about a French schoolgirl is a sensual feast for the eyes and ears. The girl, struggling to gain independence from her difficult family life and trying to understand her own sexual awakening, begins a torrid and illicit affair with a wealthy Chinese man. Although they don't really approve of the affair, her family tries to manipulate the situation for their own benefit. Annaud captures the tension-filled colonial setting that serves as a backdrop for these displaced persons, and the film is aided by gorgeous cinematography. (Filmed in English)
