REVIEW
A witty, bizarre and very Australian take on love, sibling rivalry, Barry White and fish. In tiny Sunray, Australia, two quirky (to say the least) sisters have their humdrum lives turned upside-down when famed big-city DJ Ken Sherry (a terrifically droll Shevtsov) moves in next door. Unusual and funny, Love Serenade is brightly written and directed by Barrett, with spot-on performances by both Otto and Frith as the sisters, and especially Shevtsov, whose Ken Sherry is quite an imaginative character. Love Serenade is chock full of great songs "about the act of procreation" (as one character puts it), and like that other Aussie gem, Muriel's Wedding, the film uses these infectious tunes in very specific, stylish ways. Until an admittedly unique though abrupt and unsatisfying end, Love Serenade is a truly odd, enjoyable comedy.
