SKINOPSIS
A smart and compelling look at life on the fringe centering around a three-way power struggle between a small-time grifter, and the two women in his life: his mother and his girlfriend. Superb style, peppered with moments of shocking brutality and some full-frontal Annette Bening - whose body was fucking rockin' at the time.
REVIEW
Director Frears' foray into the degenerate world of novelist Jim Thompson is a compelling look at life on the fringe. The story centers around a three-way power struggle between Roy, a small-time grifter, and the two women in his life: his mother and his girlfriend. Cusack sinks his teeth into the role of Roy with intense complexity. Huston dazzles as Roy's mother, Lily, a ruthless swindler who works the odds at the track for the mob. Bening is Myra, Cusack's part-time-prostitute girlfriend, who tries to lure him into the big-stakes world of the "long con." Though theirs is a world filled with mistrust and betrayal, Frears' vision of their lives is tempered with occasional moral twists and underlying humanity.
Superbly acted and directed, The Grifters is peppered with moments of shocking brutality as it careens toward its tragic conclusion.
