A fast-paced and tense adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's novel, recounting the fall of mobster Dutch Schultz (Hoffman) as seen through the eyes of an ambitious teenager, Billy Bathgate (Dean). Though slightly miscast, Hoffman excels as the moody gangster. Nestor Almendros' eerie cinematography imbues the film with a grim and destructive mood.
