An entertaining and gripping English-language Spanish thriller about a man caught in a web of deadly intrigue after he notices a string of mysterious deaths around him. A perfectly cast Timothy Hutton is David, a best-selling science fiction writer who is invited to a seminar at a resort hotel on the Spanish island of Mallorca. On the first night, his fiancée, Jane (Georgia Mackenzie), mysteriously leaps from their room’s balcony to her death. But hers is not the only suicide as several others on the island begin to kill themselves. One of those, Spaniard Silvia (Lucia Jimenez), survives, remembering only one phone call that, when she answered it, played Billie Holiday’s song, “Gloomy Sunday.” Distraught but mystified by his girlfriend’s death, David begins his own investigation and discovers that eight people have committed suicide, and each received that same phone call. With Silvia in tow, David is sucked into the nightmarish mystery and the possibility that a deranged old scientist (a creepy David Kelly) may be involved. The Kovak Box is a fast-paced tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you think twice about Billie Holiday songs.
