Drop Dead Sexy

As is usually the case in these indie black comedies, two down-and-out mismatched buddies, the scheming Frank (Lee) and the doltish drunkard Eddie (Glover), find themselves knee-deep in debt to the criminal element. Even worse, when they try to do "one last job," crimeboss Spider (Vince) pulls a scam himself and tries to off them in the process. Having survived, they hatch another outrageous scam involving an unearthed stripper (Keller), blackmail, and maybe eventually doing the right thing. Comparisons to "My Name Is Earl" are inevitable, partly because Lee is again playing a self-professed lucky huckster, and partly because Lee's acting range makes Keller's performance as the corpse look nuanced. It's Crispin Glover who's the real treat here; in the same year he made the incomprehensible What Is It?, he pulls out this carefully controlled comic performance as a slightly slow southerner with an irresistible drawl. His terrific timing makes even the most inane scripted jokes sound like genius. Worth a look. Watch for Brad "Chucky" Dourif as the slightly unhinged coroner.
