REVIEW
In this visual and emotional powerhouse of a film, filmmakers Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey (Party Monster) go behind-the-scenes of the most legendary porn film of all time. Through interviews with social leaders, theater owners, former FBI men, the director, crew & stars and movie lovers the story of this phenomenon is pieced together. The director of the film Gerard Damiano made the film knowing it was something special. He had made porn before but this one seemed different. It's release became the force of societal change. It seems like Deep Throat was part of the wave of sexual libertation overtaking the country in the early '70s. Because it was story driven and shot on sets the filmmaker needed money and took in "partners". When the film took off the "partners" required that he sell them his share. With the film booked into legitimate theaters it attracted attention, including the government, which started banning the film everywhere. This notoriety is what made the film a hit! Even though the film has made over $600 million, Damiano now lives modestly in a retirement community. Stars Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems also had modest fates. Lovelace went through several periods of renouncing and embracing her stardom. She died a few years ago in a period of making personal appearances and finally accepting herself as the star of the most notorious porn film ever made. Harry Reems on the other hand, has always healthily accepted this role. He now sells real estate and become Christian, but was excited to be interviewed for the film, and has no regrets. The interviews with Gore Vidal, John Waters and their ilk are just icing on the cake of this superb non-fiction film. With period music, footage and some of the best interviews we've seen, Inside Deep Throat is one of favorites for the year. -- Scott Cranin
