By now, everyone in North America has probably heard of Bollywood, at least to get a secondhand impression. Some of those impressions are false. Only 98% of Bollywood films stop the action every fifteen minutes for a colorful song and dance number. Bollywood has yet to experience the kind of popularity surge that brought Hong Kong action movies and Japanese ghost films into American homes, but they’re trying. Greasing the wheels of this eventual curry train is Gurinder Chadha, who may be our best candidate for Diversity Poster Girl, a natural international envoy. Bride & Prejudice takes a plot out of Jane Austen and makes it fun – even for those who hate Jane Austen – by making it a Bollywood style musical comedy. The overwhelming impression left by Bride... is one of warmth, laughter, music, and especially color. Get your monitor ready for a workout, as this is one movie that fills the screen with every imaginable color, on costumes, sets, locations – and in the eyes of every character. -- Brian Thomas
