REVIEW
Philly native Susan Seidelman's latest film puts a fresh new twist on a familiar old story. We've all seen films about prostitutes, but how often have we seen films about legal ones? Set at a brothel in Nevada, Seidelman's yarn paints a portrait of a bevy of working girls as they go about their daily lives, which consist mostly of trading witty quips with each other by the brothel's swimming pool. That's right, these girls have got it good: an all-night mess hall, free medical checkups from the state, and a traveling salesman who brings their couture right to their door. Of course, it is work and not play, and most of them want out, especially the one who is off to be married to a guy who thinks she's a flight attendant (three weeks on, one week off). Some of the women are staunchly proud of their work, however, as are the patrons - after all, this is a brothel with a souvenir shop! Seidelman does a marvelous job presenting these women in their workplace environment without passing judgment on any of her film’s characters, or their choices in life, and in this area, she receives ample help from the engaging and talented ensemble cast.
