Mario Van Peebles portrays his filmmaking father in this true story of the production of the landmark, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. A 13-year-old Mario was forced into a role that included a scene with a real-life prostitute. Truly entertaining with enough nudity and sex to peak your interest.
REVIEW The importance of the groundbreaking African-American independent classic Sweet Sweetback’s Baad Asssss Song cannot be overstated. Directed by Melvin Van Peebles with privately raised funds and a ragtag crew, the film not only articulated the black rage of the era, but its success essentially triggered the wave of black action films of the 1970s. Now Melvin Van Peebles’ son Mario has directed a true-life chronicle of the tumultuous production of that landmark film, and the son also stars as his father. After directing a film for Hollywood, Melvin decides to embark upon an independent film that will offer an innovative depiction of a black hero who triumphs over the racism and violence inflicted by his white police tormentors. The production is beset with all of the difficulties that face independent filmmakers. Melvin must struggle (and, like his Sweetback character, hustle) to keep the film together at all costs—costs that ultimately threaten his health, his financial well-being, and his relationship with his family, including then 13-year-old Mario (who appears in a controversial scene in the original Sweetback). Baadasssss! allows the young Van Peebles to revisit the troubled circumstances behind his father’s film, and to deal with his relationship with his father in honest, often critical, though always affectionate terms. His film is a testament to the energy that fuels independent cinema and the strength of the era’s radical African American artists.
