REVIEW Colin Farrell, Sissy Spacek, Robin Wright Penn and Dallas Roberts star in this long-awaited screen adaptation of Pulitzer prize-winning gay author Michael Cunningham's (The Hours) first novel. The film begins in the '60s in suburban Ohio where Bobby and Jonathan (Harris Allan from Queer as Folk) are inseparable friends. Jonathan is totally in love with the nearly inarticulate, straight, very hip Bobby who doesn't seem to notice his buddy's obsession. After high school, the teens are pulled apart by circumstances – but their friendship remains solid. After college, in the '80s, Jonathan moves to New York City and comes out of the closet. Jonathan lives with Clare (Penn) and they are trying to have a baby together – they want to create their own new version of family. Everything changes when Bobby comes for a visit.
There's a lot of power behind this production but something isn't quite perfect in the film. We believe more care in the editing room would have produced a better film. There was lots of hubbub about Colin Farrell's penis being edited from the film -- it's too bad that could have been quite a highlight! Besides the big stars, the screenplay was written by one of the great gay writers of our time, Michael Cunningham, who adapted his own novel. Tony award-winning theater director Michael Mayer (the Broadway musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie") directed the film with special attention to the actors and their characters.
