REVIEW
Other than adding a spoiler/cliffhanger to Vol. 1 and a brief reprise to Vol. 2, this essential second part of the Kill Bill saga feels very much a whole with the first. That writer-director Tarantino stages completely different fights, wildly tangential trails of dialogue, and cribs from whole new genres of film history should be no surprise, however. In one of the breeziest 2-hours-plus you'll ever see, The Bride (Thurman) completes her checklist (Madsen & Hannah as her feuding ex-squadmates), some emotional backstory is satisfyingly filled in, and the loose ends are wrapped up -- leading to an intense showdown with Bill (Carradine) after an epic buildup worthy of Sergio Leone. The film works on so many levels that multiple viewings are required: it's a straight-up revenge tale, a spot-the-references filmgeek fest (check out the breathtaking closing shot from The Searchers for starters, or Gordon Liu's Shaw Brothers films to fully understand his exhilarating Pei Mei training scenes), and ultimately a resonatingly emotional tale of two broken hearts. In delightful throwaway bits, Tarantino again shows his skill at resurrecting B-actors: Larry Bishop cameos as a coke-snorting titty-bar owner who humiliates Madsen, and Parks is all but unrecognizable as a slimily charismatic Mexican pimp.
