Broken Lizard's Club Dread

More laid-back (if that's possible) than their cult Super Troopers, Club Dread follows the mellow vibe of its central character, Coconut Pete (Paxton). The author of the forgotten song "Pina Coladasburg" (don't mention "Margaritaville" or Jimmy Buffett around him) now has an island retreat, populated by the members of the Broken Lizard troupe, where the guests & workers are being offed one by one. If the slasher genre has been parodied to death, this one at least feels different: think Scream on pot. There are perfunctory horror scenes, to be sure, but when things get clever (like when a Pac Man re-creation turns deadly) there are big, big laughs in store. Many of the jokes are cast off so casually that they're easy to miss, but there's always another one right around the corner. Recommended as comedy, even if the film doesn't hold together as a whole; someday, it would be great to see a more disciplined effort by the troupe. An unrated version is also available which adds 15 minutes, increasing the T&A and making the pace even more languid.
