REVIEW
There are obscure American horror films, and then far beyond even that classification, there is a movie like Death Be: The Bed That Eats, a never-before-released independent production from 1977 that is also a surefire unclassifiable oddity of genre filmmaking. A genuinely dreamlike and eerie hybrid of surrealist black comedy, experimental cinematic headtrip, and splattery indie shocker, Death Bed was completed by director George Barry over a period of five years, but then never released domestically until this remastered DVD debut. However, the film developed a cult following through overseas video releases, and now Americans can finally see one of the strangest products of our country’s low-budget horror boom decade. A poetic little grim fairy tale of a haunted bed that messily devours the young people who are unfortunate enough to enter the isolated mansion which houses the lethal mattress, Death Bed feels like the type of 70’s horror film destined to be viewed under hazy conditions at 3 in the morning, no matter when you actually opt to watch this DVD.
