REVIEW This sexy, fun romantic comedy has great star-power, great directors, and great writers, so it’s no small wonder that the Coen Brothers have another success under their belts. George Clooney, in one of his best performances to date, plays a high-powered divorce attorney who never looses, but his latest conquest may prove to be too much—winning over the sexy, gold-digging divorcee Marylin Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones). His portrayal goes beyond the dashing good looks and suave personality of golden era Hollywood stars, revealing superb comedic ability, which really shines as he deftly and humorously dismantles that traditional leading man image for which he has become known. Zeta-Jones, not to be outdone, is a perfect match for Clooney and plays her gold-digger with zeal, showing us once again that there is so much more to this incredibly sexy, Academy Award winning actress. As with all Coen Brothers films, there are numerous schemes and deceptions played out by fantastic characters, but certainly not to the degree seen in their Oscar winning hit from 1996, Fargo, or from their earlier breakout, Blood Simple. This is, after all, a romantic comedy. That having been said, although it’s a departure from the unique brand of films that made them famous, Intolerable Cruelty is sure to delight even the most ardent Coen Brothers fans.
