Creepy and disturbing, May is a character study with shades of horror elements. Bettis is excellent as the title character, an oddball loner whose best friend is a porcelain doll given to her by her mother. Sisto is also quite good as the hunky budding filmmaker whose hands capture May's attention. Director McKee builds tension nicely as May's grip on reality loosens, leading to an extremely intense and gory wrap-up. The film never quite cuts loose, and it's not in the same league as other mad-protagonist character pieces like Spider or The Tenant. It is, however, a good, solid, visceral drama, and Bettis is a talent to watch.
