How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Michael Jordan taking out the trash...Paul McCartney doing his taxes...Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson starring in a formulaic romantic comedy. Great talents have to do grunt work from time to time, but that doesn't make it entertaining to watch. Compounding the problem here is a script based on such deep levels of lies and deceit that love rarely makes an appearance; the convoluted situations actually approach that of a horror film. Advice columnist Hudson is entreated to write a piece on what not to do in a relationship, resulting in the film's title; her target is McConaughey, an ad exec who coincidentally (and it's a big one) is trying to prove that he can keep a girl for, yes, 10 days. If it were meaner, this could have been up there with The War of the Roses as her boy-torture escalates; but, no, this mall-ready product keeps emphasizing phony sweetness. Is this unearnest duplicity really what America wants in its romantic escapism?
