Solaris (2002)

With this eerie and meditative sensation, Soderbergh decides to take the Kubrick route to sci-fi rather than the hyperkinetic way of Alien director Ridley Scott. Not focused on splattery action, Solaris is more of a moody unsettling love story about a man who has lost, yet aches to find again. McElhone does great work as the wife who "returns from the dead" to reunite with her husband in a place far from their earthly home, and her chemistry with Clooney is mesmerizing. Don't set yourself up for fast paced thrills here, but rather for low-key spectacular revelations about the relation of human to alien science and of imagination to infinite love.
