This is what your typical, straight-to-video suspense flick should be: unassuming, unremarkable, yet completely engaging. Spader plays a suspended cop who is wanted in a small town for holding up a bank. He gets involved with the local sheriff's ex while trying to clear his name. Very much a B-movie (the epitome of what used to be called "programmers"), The Stickup is an efficient, slick, unpretentious piece of entertainment, with good acting, a decent screenplay, and just the right amount of humor. It's truly nothing special, and certainly unmemorable, but it's fun while it lasts.
