REVIEW
Maintaining a pace that matches the ongoing convolutions in the frenetic lives of its protagonists, The Last Kiss is an engaging, funny and unerringly perceptive examination of the interlocking relationships in a multigenerational group of friends, relatives and acquaintances. The film centers on Carlo and Giulia, a beautiful young couple who find out they’re about to become parents. Their parents expect them to marry, but they’re not sure; especially Carlo, who feels a noose tightening around him. He’s already having trouble with approaching the age of 30, and is further debilitated by horror stories from a close friend with an infant. In fact, Carlo and Giulia are surrounded by people in various stages of transition, or, more to the point, people looking for change from perceived entrapment. Director Muccino’s hyperkinetic camera never loses sight of the human element, moving through a kaleidoscope of personal fluctuations and vicissitudes, of beginnings and endings and reconciliation, birth and death, searing heartbreak and utter contentment. A totally engaging and entertaining study of the human condition, related by a superb acting ensemble through a witty, grown-up script. (Italian with English subtitles) --Ann Yarabinee
