Blue Crush

Based on a magazine article by Susan Orlean, Blue Crush follows the aquatic and romantic adventures of three young women living in Hawaii whose passion for surfing runs deep. Or at least that's what we're supposed to think, for though the characters spend most of their time in water and on their boards, none of them seem to demonstrate any real passion for the sport. That probably has much to do with John Stockwell and Lizzy Weiss' screenplay adaptation, which treads much familiar territory. There's the obligatory training, bonding, romances with hunks, and the inevitable surfing competition. The latter energizes a film somewhat marooned by its tedious pacing, though a lot of the surfing footage can be exciting. However, beyond the bikinis and catching a few waves, there's not much reason to care.
