REVIEW
Graduating from music video direction (including those for Moby and Fat Boy Slim), Francis' son Roman (and Sofia's bro) continues the family tradition with this admirable feature debut. Invoking the style of the French New Wave, CQ is a film-within-a-film, an entertaining, loopy spoof of '60s sci-fi/secret agent flicks. Davies plays Paul, a self-obsessed American filmmaker living in Paris who is directing a filmic diary. He's financing it by toiling as editor on the cheap French sci-fi opus Dragonfly, that is until its director careens his sports car into a wall, and Paul is thrust onto the director's chair. Now, how to juggle directing two films and keeping his high-maintenance girlfriend from walking out. Coppola clearly enjoys his friendly jabs at the filmmaking trade, and his re-creation of Dragonfly shows a true appreciation of the genre. With some spot-on cameos, this is part camp, part homage, and all fun.
