REVIEW
After the test-marketing disaster of its current "scary" video game, a computer company puts incredible stress on its small group of misfit geniuses to create a terrifying monster in time to make the promised delivery date. They succeed; unfortunately, a power surge causes the game to enter our world. Entertaining and fast-paced silliness, How to Make a Monster is given some weight (a bit too much, perhaps) by writer-director Huang, by playing up the cutthroat greed of American business. This is basically a horror variation on the themes explored in Huang's Swimming with Sharks, and it works well. . . to a point. While this is overall a fun ride, it goes a bit too far in hammering its "who's-the-real-monster?" theme home, with a somewhat unbelievable, uber-cynical ending leaving a bad taste. --Dean Galanis
