An exclusive Manhattan prep school is the home to a handful of clichéd students: the bad girl (Phillips), the cute druggie (Renfro), the uptight Brit (Barton), and, of course, the personality-free protagonist (Swain) who gets upstaged by her costars. Ostensibly a drama about fitting in and growing up (with its frank talk and indie spirit, reminiscent of an adolescent Metropolitan), Tart eventually takes a sharp right turn into overwrought thriller territory, with a healthy dose of homophobia to boot. True to its title, Tart will leave a sour taste in your mouth.
