REVIEW
The transition from pop star to big-screen icon is often perilous at best, and while Crossroads isn't exactly Shanghai Surprise, Britney ain't doing herself no favors. After deciding not to lose her virginity to her high school boyfriend, Brit packs her bags and sets off on a road trip with her girlfriends (one's preggers, the third's engaged), heading to L.A. for a music audition (natch). They bring along an ex-con (Mount), a typical rebel with a heart of gold -- Brit eventually gives "it" up for him, so those looking for a role model beware. The road trip formula is basically an excuse to spotlight Ms. Spears without requiring her to carry a real narrative, the most shameless showcase being a Karaoke competition where she none-too-convincingly belts "I Love Rock 'n' Roll." Sorry, Brit, but the Karaoke craze is over, and if you don't want your career to end up the same way, it's time to reinvent yourself as something other than a movie star.
