REVIEW
One of England's most prolific and celebrated writers of the 20th century, Iris Murdoch dedicated a lifetime to the written and spoken word, philosophy and education. In her 70s, however, the gifted author was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. In the portrait of the ruthless disintegration of Alzheimer's, and a celebration of a unique, singular spirit, Iris gets it remarkably right. Dame Judi gives a superlative performance as Iris, bringing passion, intelligence and ultimately frailty to what undoubtedly was a force of nature. Based on two books by her husband John Bayley, brilliantly played by Oscar winner Broadbent, the film covers two periods in Iris' life: her courtship with the awkward Bayley, and the twilight of their relationship. As a love story it's truthful and vibrant, as a recollection of the passing of a great mind and a great love, it's heartbreaking. Winslet is outstanding as the younger Iris.
