REVIEW
To watch a Rivette film is to share his love of acting, his love of play, and his love of love itself. The six central characters of Va Savoir begin rooted unhappily in their routines, and over the course of 2½ hours, find love both new and old and end up better for it. Interspersed are scenes of a Pirandello play, whose director and actress are drifting apart: She towards old flame Pierre, he in pursuit of a lost Pirandello manuscript (and its lovely young keeper). The pairings twist about amiably, climaxing in whimsically drunken duel for the actress's affections. This is the flipside to his L'Amour Fou; the air stays light throughout, and nothing of too much consequence happens. Unless you count l'amour. (French with English subtitles)
