REVIEW
Although there's been much written about screen icon James Dean, this made-for-TV biography offers little that we haven't heard before about the enigmatic actor. However, there's a sincerity to the entire production that helps make this semi-fictional look at Dean's life of some interest. Franco, though given to a little too much brooding, nevertheless captures the essence of Dean, and looks more like the actor than the various other stars to portray him. The story follows Dean from a sad childhood to his attempt at stardom in both New York and Hollywood, all the while haunted by the estranged relationship with his father. The behind-the-scenes glimpses at moviemaking are very well done, though the film struggles to fully communicate the true character of "Jimmy." The film seems to reach a point of honesty, then pulls back when more needs to be said. The acting is first-rate, though the film steers clear of Dean being openly gay, and his many relationships with men. --David Bleiler
