The Man Who Cried

Ricci plays Suzie, a Russian Jew abandoned by her father in 1930's Europe. She crosses Europe, landing in Paris amongst a showgirl (Blanchett), an opera singer (Turturro) and a gypsy (Depp). Sally Potter's overwrought drama plays like last half-hour of Gone with the Wind, with trial on top of tribulation on top of tragedy. It's absurd and exhausting, and undermines the pleasures of the attractive cast (especially Ricci and her ever-heaving bosom) and the elaborate camerawork.
