REVIEW
Lake Tahoe, California. Margaret Hall (Swinton) wakes early one morning to find the body of her gay 17-year-old son's lover impaled on an anchor on the beach of their lake-front home. With her husband away and nowhere to turn, she makes a reckless decision to move the body and hide it in the lake, only to find herself and her family in even greater danger when the body is found, and she is confronted by blackmailers. A taut, compact thriller, The Deep End takes an ordinary mom and places her in extraordinary circumstances. Deals are made and broken, sleazy businessmen blackmail, and there's more going on under the surface than either we or she can see. Swinton gives a nuanced, sympathetic performance, which goes a long way in making one care about her and her family's plight. "E.R."'s Visnjic makes a good impression as a hood who may or may not be on the Halls' side.
