REVIEW
Stately composition and measured pacing inform director Leconte's treatment of actual events set in 1850 on the island of St. Pierre. Based on court records, the story recounts the aftermath of a childish prank by two drunks, resulting in murder. French justice of the time demands the guillotine, which must be transported to the remote fishing village. In the ensuing months, the townsfolk debate the intracacies and implications of capital punishment, a discussion made more complicated by the intended recipient, who shows true remorse and has become a fully integrated member of the community. Also brought to the fore is the unique character of the captain and his wife, whose developing relationship with the criminal underscores the couple's differences from the rest of the island community. The three principal players (Binoche, Auteuil, Kusturica) deliver deliberate and thoughtful performances, involving the viewer in each of their internal reflections as much as in the course of events. An involving, intelligent film. (French with English subtitles)
