REVIEW
Director Mandoki and writer Gerald DiPego reunite after their near-miss Message in a Bottle for an even murkier romantic drama that shares a little in common with DiPego's misfire Phenomenon. This project may have been doomed from the start. Slow moving and never sure exactly where it wants to go, Angel Eyes stars the alluring Lopez as a Chicago cop who, in the film's good opening moments, arrives on the scene to aid an accident victim. Cut to one year later. An enigmatic, trenchcoated man known only as Catch (Caviezel) rescues her from a gunman's bullet, and these two lonely souls begin to see one another. The film tries to add some mystery through mood and plot development (Is this the same man in the film's opening? Is he a ghost? Is he crazy?), but the scattershot screenplay is unable to create tension or much sympathy towards the characters. Lopez and Caviezel (who can out-angst Nicolas Cage) try their best, and have several touching scenes together, but this basically is a slow journey to nowhere.
