REVIEW
The mummy returns, indeed. Not quite a promise as it is a threat, this sequel to 1999's enjoyable surprise hit is much more of the same -- emphasis on same. Fraser returns as the derring-do adventurer; so do Weisz as his wife and Hannah as her brother. Vosloo is back, too, as the 3,000-year-old mummy whose name you can't pronounce. Back are the terrific special effects (they may even be better this time around), cheesy story (it may be cheesier this time around), and mix of humor and action. The Rock is new. Don't count on anything else new, however. This rehash isn't as fun as the original, and the characters -- who helped make the first film so entertaining -- are secondary to the stunning effects. Mummy Returns lacks its predecessor's energy level, too, but since you're constantly bombarded by loud, eye-popping visuals, you barely have the time to notice. A rousing finale wraps this mummy up, giving the appearance that this second go-round is more substantial than it really is. There's always something going on, some predicament to get out of, but it just isn't quite the same. Oh, wait, yes it is.
