FROM THE LINER NOTES

Johnny Depp stars as cocaine kingpin George Jung in this energetic and unapologetic story of one man's rise and fall in the drug trade.
REVIEW
It's amazing how mundane the life of George Jung was, considering he was one of the biggest marijuana and cocaine importers in U.S. history. Worse, Blow doesn't seem to notice, and the lack of thrills is especially evident in the wake of Fear and Loathing, Boogie Nights and Traffic. As Jung, Depp immerses himself once again into character, but there's not much there to inhabit. The story follows Jung from the early 1970s, where he starts in petty drug dealing, to his rise as a dealer working along side Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. Jealousy, greed and betrayal soon bring Jung's world crashing down. Due more in part to Depp's portrayal than dramatic license, a small sympathy is felt for Jung and what becomes an almost comical series of bad choices. But director Demme isn't able to sustain the energy level from a good opening that nearly makes you feel for the characters. The result is a familiar jaunt down memory lane that has little else to say than it sucks to get caught.
