The Adventurers

The epic, all-star melodrama suffered a blow in the 1970s and died a rather quick death -- this bombastic, static adaptation of Harold Robbins' trashy novel may have had something to do with it. Set in a fictional South American country, the story follows a playboy and his romantic conquests, all acted out against political upheavel and hoary plot developments. Everyone seems embarrassed, though Bergen comes off best as an American heiress who suffers tragedy upon tragedy that only bad soap opera can produce.
