REVIEW
Max and Page, a beautiful mother and daughter con artist team portrayed by the beautiful Weaver and Hewitt, have just scored the latest in a long string of stings. The victim is the gruff Dean (Liotta), a chop-shop operator who has dispensed $300,000 to the duo, unknowingly duped. Next, it's off to Palm Springs for these dirty rotten scoundresses, where they search for their next, rich pigeon. How they do it and what happens afterwards forms the basis for this intermittently funny con comedy, which should have been a whole lot funnier but manages to flimflam enough agreeable chuckles as to bamboozle the viewer into thinking it's better than it is. Director Mirkin gives his film a polished look, nearly as sparkling as his two ladies eve are glamorous, but the screenplay doesn't always hit its mark, as some of the jokes are needlessly self-conscious. But Mirkin has also assembled a game cast who know how to rise above the limitations of a script, giving seasoned performers such as Weaver, Liotta and Hackman ample room to lock their sights on a joke. They don't always succeed in finding the laugh, but when they do, Heartbreakers can be downright pleasing.
